When It Comes to Spotting a Narcissist, Eyebrows May Be a Dead Giveaway

If eyes are the window to the soul, eyebrows are the window to the psyche.

At least that’s what new research out of University of Toronto suggests. According to the results of a study published in the Journal of Personality, people who maintain distinctively thick and well-groomed eyebrows are more likely to be narcissists than people with thinner eyebrow.

The fascinating study was conducted by photographing the faces of male and female volunteers who had previously completed the Narcissistic Personality Inventory—a test used to measure a person’s personality on the scale of subclinical to grandiose narcissism.

The photographs were then cropped to include only the eyebrows of each participant. A team of independent coders then rated each person’s eyebrows on a series of qualities, including grooming, distinctiveness, and femininity.

What they found was a strong correlation between participants’ self-reported narcissism and eyebrow distinctiveness.

The link? Researchers believe it comes from a desire to be aesthetically unique and recognizable.

“Eyebrows facilitate facial recognition,” Miranda Giacomin, one of two authors of the study, told The Independent. “Narcissists may maintain distinct, thick, and dense brows to enhance recognition, which they are motivated to attain,” she explained.

So the next time you’re trying to get a read on somebody, take a look at their eyebrows.
