Construction of unique birdhouses topic for Orwigsburg society gathering
ORWIGSBURG — A program titled “From Vintage Barnes to Beautiful Birdhouses” is lined up for 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Orwigsburg Historical Society & Museum, 109 E. Mifflin St.
In a release, the society’s Jennifer Bowen said local craftsman Jack Jones of JJ’s Woodcrafts “will share the fascinating story behind his one-of-a-kind birdhouses.”
The session is part of the 30th anniversary program series “Tracing Schuylkill County’s History 2024,” according to Bowen’s release. It is free and open to the public. Refreshments and fellowship will follow.
Bowen said Jones will explain how he repurposes material from barn wood dating back to the mid-1800s for his creations. He will also have birdhouses available for purchase.
Each birdhouse is unique, she continued, adding that some of the birdhouses are made from “weathered or distressed wood” but “all are designed to accommodate the living habits of birds.”
Jones will also provide information about birds as well as his process and involve the audience with identifying hardware. He’ll speak about his designs, recycled material, variations of grain and wood knots plus related topics.
The program, Bowen added, is made possible in part by the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation and The Fred V. Knecht Memorial Fund.
