NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Tucked away on Carrollton Avenue, close to Canal Street, hangs a sign saying “Zasu.” It represents one of Mid-City’s restaurants, owned by James Beard award winning Chef Sue Zemanick.

She’s taken inspiration from her Slovakian heritage to create unique flavors to her restaurant.

“We are very excited for our Coolinary menu this year that we are offering,” explained Zemanick. “We have lots of things for you to choose from, some of my favorite dishes are making a re-appearance on this menu.”

The menu for Coolinary features three courses for $58 per person.

“For some of our starters, we have grilled Gulf shrimp with pink eye peas, charred red okra, cherried tomatoes and a chile vinaigrette. One of our other starters is a crunchy green salad with haricots verts, sugar snap peas, asparagus, zucchini, spicy pepitas, whipped feta and a jalapeno cumin vinegarette,” said Zemanick.

As far as entrees go, you have a choice of potato, cheddar and tomato pierogies or a sauteed fish du jour. When WGNO’s Amy Russo stopped by, Zemanick whipped up a flounder with oyster mushrooms, sunchoke puree, haricots verts, almonds and lemon-caper brown butter.

For dessert, the options are vanilla bean creme brulee or an ice cream/sorbet that changes daily.

“Zasu is my baby. It’s about five years old now, and we are really happy to be in Mid-City,” said Zemanick. “We serve a variety of seafood dishes, vegetable driven. We also have things for everyone. We do have meat, if you’re not really into seafood.”

Zemanick says come running, the restaurant has great food, a wonderful staff and interesting bar program featuring great wines to choose from.
