'Squad up': Newly sworn-in Reps. Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman pose with AOC, Omar, Pressley and Tlaib

Newly minted Congresswoman Cori Bush is ready to join “The Squad.”

A nurse, pastor and community organizer, Bush, 44, made history back in November when she became the first Black woman in Missouri to be elected to Congress. On Sunday, she stood alongside her congressional peers, including fellow freshman Jamaal Bowman on New York, as she prepared to be sworn into office.

Bush tweeted a photo of herself and Bowman along with the original members of “The Squad,” the informal name for the small group of progressive women of color who have pushed Democrats to the left. The group includes U.S. Representatives Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley. In Sunday’s photo, the group smiled for the camera, each wearing face masks due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Sunday morning, Bush took to Twitter to share her feelings as she prepared to take her seat in Congress.

“I’ve survived sexual assault, police abuse, domestic violence and being unhoused and uninsured. That's not a unique pain I carry,” she said in a tweet. “It's one that so many of us live with each day. Today, I take my seat in Congress to fight for a world where nobody has to endure that pain.”

Bush has previously spoken about how much it means for her to find a close-knit group in Congress.

“That's my family,” Bush told Yahoo back in November. “I'm already a part of the Squad and we're going to fight this thing together.” Bush said she particularly found a kinship with Pressley.

“One person that I've talked to a lot, that's always checking up on me, is my sister Ayanna Pressley,” said Bush. “She's always like, ‘You good sis?’ We talk and it's like, ‘What's needed?’ And I think that she also understands that there's also this other piece of being a Black woman and a particular hue of Black woman where we need to stand and build one another up. She's not looking at it like, ‘Oh, she's coming to take some of my shine’ or none of that. It's like ‘Sis, let's do this together.’”

Members of the Squad shared Bush’s tweet.

“Let’s go!” said Ocasio-Cortez, adding a series of muscle emojis.

“Unbought and unbossed,” said Omar, along with a fist emoji.

“The squad is big, family,” Pressley joined in, a sentiment echoed by Bowman.

The tweets received a wide variety of responses. Writer E. Jean Carroll replied, “You are the 2021 version of the Founding Fathers. I.E. You are the fierce and ferocious Founding Mothers and Fathers!”

Another response referred to the group as “The New (Congressional) Avengers.”
