This Cottage in Maine Is Where Idyllic New England Summers Are Made

New England has some wicked stereotypes. But no matter what the rest of the country thinks, few places are better at embracing the idyllic summer spirit than New England.

The Cliff House Maine in Cape Neddick, one of the region’s most historic hotels, recently underwent a renovation to make it even more New England-y than ever before.

The hotel has been open on Maine’s southern coast since 1872 but this is the first summer that guests will be able to see the hotel in its renovated glory. “As a property rich in local history, it is imperative to fuse its unique past with updated, well-appointed and stylish amenities and comforts sought by today’s travelers,” the hotel’s general manager, Nancy White, said in a statement.

The rooms are decked out in “maritime chic” decor but those who want the full northeastern experience can rent out the Cliff House’s cottage. Although the entire hotel is steeped in New England vibes, the Weare Cottage is like a lobster roll reincarnated as accommodation. The oceanside cottage features a private front porch, original stone fireplace and nautical furnishings. (Expect plenty of rope, anchors and lobster imagery.)

Guests don’t need to leave the property to get a taste of local cuisine. Nubb’s Lobster Shack is an onsite restaurant dishing out Maine lobster rolls, fried clams, and more.

Those who stay at the Cliff House will be treated to fireworks every Sunday evening from July 9 to September 2, and s’more roasting around a fire pit. There’s also an 18-hole golf green, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and an expansive spa.
