Couple Invents Device That Prevents Hair From Clogging Drains
Anyone with medium-length to long locks knows that it’s just a matter of time before your hair builds up in your tub or shower drain, leading to a nasty clog that looks like something out of “The Ring.”
After experiencing the same drain-clogging woes, Serge and Elena Karnegie came up with a solution called the TubShroom, which catches hair before it can block up your pipes. As strands go down the drain, they automatically wrap around the cylindrical device — something hair sometimes does with the sink’s stopper. Except since the TubShroom is wider and made of soft silicone, the hair slides off easily with a single wipe rather than creating an impossible-to-unravel tangle around the stopper or a clog that requires harsh chemicals to break it up.
Their original Kickstarter and IndieGogo campaigns raised nearly $200,000 last year, according to Core77. The couple has now created a smaller version for bathroom sinks called the SinkShroom and launched a Kickstarter campaign in July, which is fully funded many times over. The device, which costs the same as a couple of bottles of Liquid-Plumr, comes in several colors, including white, grey, and blue.
While the invention helps save time and money for many people, the Karnegies confess to Yahoo Beauty that the device also rescued their relationship. “To be honest, our invention pretty much saved our marriage,” jokes Serge. “We were constantly arguing who’s going to clean the drain, for we both have long hair. The TubShroom was invented about three years ago and we’ve used it since. We decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign, which turned out to be a huge success. We then came out with a SinkShroom, as many of our TubShroom customers asked for it.”
The Karnegies are already working on their next product: the ShowerShroom, which is larger in diameter and designed to accommodate those walk-in shower drains, since hair clogging doesn’t discriminate. Clearly, their invention has resonated with others. “We’re now a No. 1 bestseller in the category on Amazon,” says Serge.
