Create a Trendy Fluted Dresser With This IKEA Hack
Summer is quickly approaching—what better way to celebrate warmer days than to head outside with a good DIY project for your home? Fluted furniture is one of the hottest home decor trends of the moment, so naturally it tops our list of worthy do-it-yourself contenders. But while most fluted pieces you'd find in retail outlets lean toward neutral minimalism, we prefer those clad in trendy colors inspired by hues found in nature, like simply white, navy, and vintage blue.
"This year, spring and summer colors are blurring the boundaries between inside and outside," says Sue Kim, the color expert at wood staining powerhouse Minwax. "Using more natural-toned colors in living spaces helps highlight the beauty of wood and perfectly pairs the indoors with the outdoors."
To illustrate her point, Minwax is sharing with us a super-simple step-by-step guide to making your very own fluted furniture piece, using IKEA's Malm dresser and the brand's water-based wood stain in Woodrose. Easy, affordable, and endlessly stylish, this is one DIY project you won't regret taking on.
Materials:
IKEA Malm dresser
1/4-inch x 3/4-inch solid pine screen moulding
Minwax Semi-Transparent Stain in Woodrose
10 gold drawer pulls
4 gold furniture legs
Pin nails
Minwax Pre-stain Wood Conditioner
Wood glue
Steps:
1. Pre-stain the top and sides of the dresser with the Minwax water-based wood conditioner. Within the allotted timing specified in the directions, stain the top and sides of the dresser with the Minwax solid wood stain.
2. While that dries, cut the wooden screen moulding to the vertical length of the drawers. Adhere them with a strip of wood glue and one pin nail placed at the top and bottom of each ? round. Take care to ensure all the rods are aligned evenly. Let dry completely.
3. Pre-stain the rods, drawer faces, and edges. Within the allotted timing, stain the top and sides of the dresser with wood stain. Let dry.
4. Cover the entire piece with a topcoat of stain and allow to dry.
5. Attach the drawer pulls to the drawers (you may want to use a paper template to ensure proper placement). We drilled a hole through the fluting and then attached them.
6. Drill the furniture legs into the bottom of the cabinet. We reinforced the bottom with extra wood.
