With the midseason finale of Criminal Minds: Evolution just airing on Paramount+, it's going to be a little while before we see any action from our favorite agents of the BAU. But Paget Brewster is keeping herself busy while on hiatus, even giving a shoutout to former co-star Matthew Gray Gubler in the process.
The How I Met Your Father guest star recently had followers in a tizzy when she uploaded a picture Matthew drew her to Instagram. The drawing appeared to be sentimental to Paget, as she had it mounted and framed on a wall in her home.
"Timely Gubler," she wrote on December 13, while pointing to the unique sketch.
Although Paget didn't reveal the reason behind why she felt compelled to talk about Matthew's illustration, longtime Criminal Minds fans didn't hesitate to flock to the actress' comments section. Unsurprisingly, one particular theme was apparent in the responses — calls for Matthew to rejoin the hit procedural drama.
"PLEASE BRING HIM BACK," one person wrote on Instagram. "Does this mean he's coming back?" another follower asked. "What the actual HELL is going on ?? do not play with my emotions," a different fan added.
While they were known for their on-screen friendship as Dr. Spencer Reid and SSA Emily Prentiss, their special bond expanded beyond TV. Matthew actually officiated Paget's 2014 wedding to Steve Damstra, and she starred in a number of his projects outside of working on Criminal Minds. With this in mind, it makes sense why Paget has an idea about why Matthew decided to skip the reboot after the original CBS series ended in 2020.
"Matthew was the only person in the last two seasons that had been in every single episode. He did 15 years straight through," she told Looper in August. "From 25 to 40, the guy was on one show, and that's when we shot 22, 24 episodes a year. He was never able to go do other stuff, so I understand. He wants to direct. He graduated from NYU to direct, and his first audition was Criminal Minds."
So, will fans see Matthew back for more screen time as Dr. Spencer Reid? At the moment, that's to be determined. While he's busy working on projects regarding his 2019 best-selling children's book, we have to note that he has directed 12 episodes of Criminal Minds. So, it wouldn't be a big shock if he returned for a behind-the-camera-role.
Maybe that's something for viewers to look out for when Criminal Minds: Evolution returns on January 12 ...
