What is Trader Joe's Spicy Chakri Mix?

Trader Joe's Spicy Chakri Mix is a crunchy, spicy snack mix made up of fried rice and chickpea flour sticks, peanuts and fried curry leaves all tossed it all in a seasoning mix made from red chili and jalape?o powders, mustard, cumin, turmeric, salt and ajowan seeds.

According to the Trader Joe's website, chakri (also spelled chakli) means "disc" in Sanskrit, the language used in Hindu scriptures and classical Indian poems. From a snacking standpoint, chakri are fried wheels made with extruded rice and chickpea flour dough. Trader Joe's uses a similar process to make their chakri, but you'll notice that there aren't any discs in the mix. That's because TJ's cuts the dough into little sticks and fries them until they get the same "crazy crunch."

The Trader Joe's Spicy Chakri Mix costs $3.29 for a 7 oz. bag.

Why Do Redditors Love Trader Joe's Spicy Chakri Mix?

In a nutshell, the snack is beloved because it's deliciously versatile. The Trader Joe's website suggests pairing the snack mix with their Double Cream Gouda or an IPA. Those both sound great, but Reddit has some additional ideas.

"It's good on soup, too," commented someone else.

"I think it’s a great topping for soups too. Adding it to a creamy soup would cut the spice a bit," agreed another.

The soup convo got us to thinking that the snack would be good with chilled summer soups, too. We're thinking a tomatoey gazpacho or a Middle-Eastern-inspired yogurt soup.

Oh. Sorry. Back to the Redditors.

"I’ve also found the flavor of this pairs nicely with honey crisp apples as a snack at work," another commenter said. "The spices work really well with the apples."

"I’ve also enjoyed it sprinkled on a cottage cheese bowl with sliced cucumbers and tomatoes," concurred another.

"I love the suggestion of cottage cheese and yogurt," wrote one person. "I actually forgot about this snack and haven’t bought it in a long time. It’s on my list for my haul this week!"
