Creating the perfect outfits just got easier thanks to a styling hack from TikToker Marissa Fair. She relies on a point system, a method that awards an amount of points to each item in your closet. When putting outfits together, your look should ideally aim for six to eight points on this fashion scale. Find out how to put this styling hack to practice with your own clothes, plus seven sample outfits that'll leave you looking and feeling like eight points!

How do you style your clothes using Marissa Fair's point system?

According to Fair, the eight point system helps determine whether your outfit is "overwhelming, underwhelming, or right on the money." She shares the beginner styling tip in a TikTok post, including a breakdown of the points.

Here's how each item in your outfit gets scored:

  • Tops: 1 point

  • Bottoms: 1 point

  • Dresses: 2 points

  • Patterns or bold colors: 2 points

  • Jewelry: 1 point

  • Shoes: 1 point

  • Socks (if they add to the outfit): 1 point

  • Belts: 1 point

  • Hats: 1 point

  • Overcoats: 2 points

  • Hair accessories and handbags: 1 point

Wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers, Fair's outfit only totals three points. But by adding a necklace, printed blazer, and a bag, she brings her look up to seven points. "See how it's looking much more put together and much more fashionable than if I just had the three pieces we started with?" says the stylist.

Note that nothing goes higher than two points on the scale, so even though this dress is patterned, it's still only two points.

Simple enough, right?

To get you started, we've put together seven outfits from different retailers. Each look totals a different number of points, but we break everything down to give you a better understanding of how this styling methodology works.
