Black clothing has a reputation as what’s worn at funerals, for corporate office jobs, or for spooky Halloween-esque conventions; and the inky hue has always had a central place in the palette of the dark punk, rock, and goth cultures. But if the latest resurgence of the little black dress has taught us anything, it’s that black, too, can be the happiest color.
Dakota Johnson proved just that with her latest look. The star of the upcoming Madame Web made an appearance Monday at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, in a strapless black velvet minidress from Wardrobe.NYC. (Note, too, that black has long been the home color of New York City—with its grime, fabulous fashion, and generational impatience—so the outfit was a perfect choice.)
Johnson’s LBD featured a rounded neckline and a sleek corset bodice. Styled by Kate Young, the actor wore the piece with monochrome staples, including transparent black tights and pointy black suede heels with an ankle strap. She accessorized elegantly, with a black statement necklace featuring a massive 56-carat diamond in the middle, plus a curly gold ring, both from Belperron.
The actor wore her hair in her signature casual waves and straight bangs; she looked incredible in bronzy makeup and a matte orangey-brown lip.
Johnson plays the lead in the upcoming woman-led, live-action superhero film Madame Web, which tells the origin story of Cassandra Webb, who possesses psychic abilities. The character exists within the “Spider-Verse” made famous by Marvel’s Spider-Man. Other cast members include Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Emma Roberts.
Madame Web premieres on Valentine’s Day, February 14.
