This Dan + Shay Blind Audition Wedding Serenade Could Only Happen on 'The Voice'
Shay Mooney, Dan Smyers
It was a magical moment on The Voice when Dan + Shay learned that Zoe Levert, who was there for her Blind Audition, was going to use their song “From the Ground Up” as her first-dance song at her wedding next year to fiancé Ryan.
Even though Zoe, who sang “Better Man (Taylor’s Version)” and only got a single-chair turn from John Legend, didn’t make their team, Dan Smyers asked for a guitar and Ryan was called to the stage.
Shay Mooney joked, “No pressure but we have a pastor if you guys want to knock it out right now.”
Dan added, “It would be a first on The Voice.”

Then Shay said, “This is going to be a rehearsal for your wedding,” and the duo performed “From the Ground Up” while the engaged couple danced.
It was a touching moment felt by all the judges, but especially Chance the Rapper, who filmed it on his phone.
When they were done, John said, “It’s abundantly clear if you had a choice, you’d have picked Dan + Shay as your coaches.”

Zoe insisted, “No, Team Legend all the way.”
“We still got room for a steal,” Shay pointed out.
John finally got to give Zoe his critique. He told her, “I’m so happy for you for everything that’s happening in your life. I am so happy that you got to be serenaded by these amazing artists. Only on The Voice. Your higher range sounded so good. Your tone was so clear. We just have to plan a song that doesn’t require you to go to that bottom part of your range, and that’s what I do as a coach. I’m excited you’re on Team Legend.”

Zoe, 20, is currently a psychology major with a minor in music in college in New Orleans. It was there that she met Ryan.
“I am super involved in my school’s music program and that’s where I met my fiancé,” she said in her video package. “He claims he had a crush on me as soon as he saw me but I asked him out first. Ryan is just one of the most selfless people I have ever met. He’s so supportive of all of my crazy wild dreams. I truly believe that I have found the perfect person for me.”
Zoe is a preacher’s kid, so her family moved around a lot, so music was a constant in her life. The reason she chose to sing “Better Man” is she’s a Taylor Swift fan.
“I’m a songwriter,” Zoe said. “I started to take songwriting seriously when Taylor Swift’s Folklore album came out and I was just in love with all the writing devices she was using. I am a major Swiftie. Diehard Swiftie.”
The Voice airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT and Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Episodes are available to stream next day on Peacock.
