Dan Stevens broke the hearts of Downton Abbey fans everywhere when he abruptly exited the series, forcing the show's creators to violently kill off Matthew Crawley in a car crash. (Sorry for the spoiler, but come on now, it's been years.)

But over the weekend, an Instagram post suggests that we haven't seen the last of Cousin Matthew.

Stevens, Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, and Allen Leech, who plays Tom Branson reunited for a photo in L.A.

Stevens captured the picture, "Should Matthew have a mustache for the #DowntonAbbeyMovie...? Vote below... ?? ?" indicating that he might make an appearance in the much anticipated film, perhaps in a flashback. Let's just say fans went wild in the photo's comment section.

Dockery also shared the candid, but she simply captioned it "dorks."

Leech, on the other hand, posted a different photo with just Dockery, along with the caption, "Look who’s in LA! The Dockmiester General. Soon to be my sister-in-law again. #backtotheabbey"

While Stevens has gone on to star in a number of projects including the live-action Beauty and the Beast film last year and the Marvel TV series Legion, he says he's still apologizing for leaving Downton.

"I'm still apologizing to people now," Stevens said in a 2017 interview with the Mirror. "The way Matthew went was out of my hands–but it was rather shocking. 'There were some very upset people and I've had to apologize to a lot of -people over the past four years."

Perhaps an appearance in the upcoming film would be his way of making things right with the fans.

While it's still a question as to what, if any, role Stevens will play in the movie, we do know most of the cast is coming back. One notable exception is Lily James. She and her character Rose will not appear in the film.

“My character Rose moved off to New York, so it would be farfetched to bring her back,” she told People earlier this year.

I would have loved to have come back for a scene, but for a movie, it can’t be like a Christmas special and it needs to be a focused storyline,” she said. “There was no space for Rose.”
