Star Drops Major 'Daredevil: Born Again' Bombshell
Charlie Cox is back as Matt Murdock—but not all of the original 'Daredevil' cast is coming with him.
Daredevil is back in Daredevil: Born Again—and so is everyone's favorite anti-hero from the series! The Netflix hit was canceled in 2018 after three seasons, leaving the world waiting with bated breath for more Matt Murdock.
The show's Netflix contract reportedly stipulated that no characters from the streamer's Marvel shows could appear in other Marvel Studios projects for two years after cancellation, and for a while, fans worried that we'd never see the fearless hero again. He finally arrived in Spider-Man: No Way Home in a cameo showing that not only is he a "really good lawyer," he's also a beloved fixture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (His star turn in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was one of the best parts of that series as well!)
“It was a pretty surreal moment, I’m not going to lie,” Cox told The Hollywood Reporter of being asked to reprise the role. “Bear in mind that it’s been a few years. And I was pretty convinced it was over. [Marvel Studios President] Kevin [Feige] said, ‘We’ve got some ideas, but I wanted to make sure that you, in principle, are interested.’ And I was like, ‘I’m very interested.’ And then I didn’t hear from anyone for two months. And I got to the point where I wondered if I dreamt it.”

Is Netflix Marvel still canon?
It's unclear whether Netflix's shows will be considered canon in the MCU as we know them so far, especially considering some of its castmembers have appeared as other characters (for example, Oscar winner Mahershala Ali played Cottonmouth in Luke Cage, but he's going to be the daywalker Blade in an upcoming MCU movie). That said, Vincent D'Onofrio appeared as Kingpin in Hawkeye and Charlie Cox appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, so the Multiverse may make it easier to integrate characters than it was before.

Is Daredevil: Born Again a reboot or sequel?
It remains to be seen whether the Daredevil series on Disney+ will be a direct continuation of the Netflix series. Cox told Variety of the differences between Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, "We've never really had an opportunity to explore the levity that there is in the comics. Obviously Daredevil at his core works better as a show that’s geared toward a more mature audience, but even life that is very serious has comedic moments in it. I felt like this was a really good opportunity to put Daredevil [the character] in a world where tonally there is a lot more fun to be had, it’s a lot more lighthearted, tongue in cheek. It was a really great experiment, both for me and for the character, to see how we fit into that world."
Of his cheeky turn in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, he noted, "It was just a question of freeing up a little bit and allowing myself as an actor to go toe-to-toe with Tatiana [Maslany] and make sure that Daredevil didn’t become the butt of the joke because he’s overly serious, to make sure he had his charisma, charm and wits. Whether that will play into what we do next year with Daredevil: Born Again, I don’t know, but it was certainly a fun experiment."

Is Daredevil in the MCU?
Daredevil certainly is in the MCU: Matt Murdock served as an attorney for Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cox told The Hollywood Reporter of his cameo, “It’s a big moment, not just for me, but for the character. I felt a real sense of responsibility. If that scene works, if it’s cool, if it seems in place, then the sky’s the limit where this could go. And it would be great for me, naturally, but it would be great for Matt. I feel attached to him, even though that sounds a bit strange.”

What is the Daredevil: Born Again story?
In the comics, Daredevil: Born Again follows Daredevil as he struggles to rebuild his life after Kingpin destroyed it. Without going into specifics that could be spoilers, Murdock loses his law firm, his girlfriend, his home and, at times, his sanity—and comes into contact with other Marvel superheroes. It's unclear if the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again will follow the comics story, which gets very dark and has some seriously adult themes that aren't family-friendly.
