David Burtka Says Neil Patrick Harris Cooked Dinner for Him Once—but It Didn’t Go Well
David Burtka is a Cordon Bleu-trained chef. His husband Neil Patrick Harris? Not so much.
As a result, the pair—who married in 2014 and live in New York City with their two kids, Harper and Gideon—mostly splits up any responsibilities required of the dinner hour (Burtka cooks; Harris does the dishes). Although, Burtka admits that Harris did try to cook for him once.
During a recent chat at PureWow’s offices in Manhattan, Burtka—who earlier this year published a guide to effortless entertaining called Life Is a Party, which is chock-full of recipe ideas, party planning tips and more—flashed back to the time Harris actually went all in and made a veal saltimbocca, no small job.
“It was veal and he wrapped it in prosciutto,” Burtka says. “It was just really tough and hard to cut. I pretended it was good, but we both knew it wasn’t.”
Still, just because Harris lacks the culinary prowess of his partner doesn’t mean he’s not willing to pitch in and help where he can.
“If I give him a task, he’ll do anything,” Burtka says. “He’s great at chopping and prepping stuff if I need him to. It’s really the timing of things that gets him a little overwhelmed.”
Still, according to Burtka, Harris definitely has a couple of special culinary skills that allow him to contribute where it counts. “He’s great at making guacamole and awesome at decorating cakes and stuff. And then he does the dishes, so he’s very helpful.”
Teamwork makes the dream work, right?
