David Foster Opens Up About Raising a Child at 73
The musician welcomed a baby boy with his wife, Katharine McPhee, in 2021.
David Foster got candid about his experience raising a toddler later in life, and as he reflected on his journey, he admitted to noticing stark differences in his parenting now when compared to his previous efforts in raising his now-adult children.
Foster, 73, welcomed son Rennie, in 2021 with wife Katharine McPhee, 38, after raising six daughters from prior relationships: Allison, 52, Amy, 49, Sara, 41, Erin, 40, and Jordan, 36.
"I had all daughters until my son and I love all my daughters immeasurably, but having a son is a little bit different," Foster recently revealed to PEOPLE.

"At this point in my life, it's different again," Foster admitted during his Jan. 14 appearance at the Music Center in Los Angeles for an event honoring trumpet player Jerry Moss, per the outlet. "Not better or worse, just different. I still work, I'm still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me than I have ahead of me now."
The music producer added that he has more "patience" for the chaos that comes with raising a toddler now than he did as a young adult. "I was not patient when I was young. I was arrogant and just on the move."
Foster also made a bleak confession that he's had to come to terms with the idea of not being around for his son's adult life.
"I think that I can offer one thing to Rennie even though I won't be around when he's 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe," Foster explained. "I think I can offer him wisdom from my 72 years on the planet. And maybe that's not a bad trade-off. I hope so."
One thing is for sure, with Foster's 21 years of fatherly advice and list of growing dad jokes, Rennie is undoubtedly in good hands.
