David Koma Resort 2022

David Koma designed his latest resort collection with upbeat ’70s tunes in the background and Cher on his moodboard.

It goes without saying that the result was bright, optimistic and an instant mood-booster — just what the doctor ordered after a yearlong locked down.

Inspired by Cher’s ability to go from delicate and feminine to darker and more masculine, the London-based designer melded his signature ultra mini cocktail dresses and flair for sparkle with some more androgynous tailoring, sporty separates and touches of denim.

When it came to the cocktail wear, there were no surprises at the perfectly executed silhouettes, laser-sharp cuts and body-hugging shapes. But Koma did keep things fresh by adding a range of pastels to his usual dark color palette and looked to capture daydreams of poolside parties in the yellow, orange and lilac hues of the dresses. He also mixed in crystal-embroidered flowers and some extra high slits that packed quite a punch.

“I always love to explore sculptural elements on the body and mix sharper angles with these more naive floral elements,” said Koma.

Elsewhere, he played with lingerie-inspired guipure lace trims, while a finale gown featured a playful print with large crystal motifs.

The florals featured on loose denim shirts and miniskirts had the same sexy attitude as Koma’s signature party dresses. This has been his aim from day one: Introducing new categories only when the brand’s DNA can stay intact, rather than pursuing expansion for expansion’s sake.

This translated into slinky knit dresses that hug the body just like his popular eveningwear; sexy cycling shorts; and crystal-embroidered sweatshirts — which have all easily slotted into his glamorous world and caused buyers to up their orders. The latest addition to the mix comes in the form of a handful of swim wear pieces, from a one-piece featuring a crystal print to a bikini embroidered with the same crystal flowers as the eveningwear.

“You can swim in them but also wear them out during the night,” the designer said. Looks like he found his niche again.
