Daytona Beach Roller Coaster Derails
Last night, a Daytona Beach roller coaster derailed, sending two people falling 34 feet to the ground.
The Daytona Beach Fire Department couldn't comment on the extent of injuries as of last night, but six riders out of 10 were transported to the hospital. Spokeswoman Sasha Staton said in a video that there were two trauma alerts for the people who fell, indicating more serious injuries.
There were ten riders total across three cars, and two of them fell approximately 34 feet. Two other people dangled from the front car, four were in another, and two more were in the rear car.
The fire department had to rescue the front two passengers by using ladders. The remaining passengers were rescued by firefighters using a tower truck.
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said the ride, called the Sand Blaster, passed an inspection the morning of the incident, so they're launching an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
"First and foremost, we're concerned about the individuals who were injured last night. Their well-being and recovery is of the utmost importance," spokesperson Jennifer Meale said. "Anyone who should be held accountable will be held accountable."
Meale said the ride failed two inspections in May due to structural integrity issues, but those had been resolved prior to yesterday's inspection. The 40-year-old ride has been on the Daytona Beach boardwalk for the last five years.
