'I proposed to myself!': Debra Messing gave herself an engagement ring, and the Internet loves it
Debra Messing is engaged! Sort of.
The actress got sick of waiting for a man to put a ring on it, so she did it herself — and we admire her for it. “I proposed to myself!” the “Will & Grace” star wrote on Instagram. “Actually, I had my dream ring made by these two brilliant jewelers @alexandrajules. Thank you so much for making my dream come true.”
In the photo, Messing is flashing a huge smile and an even bigger emerald on the ring finger of her left hand. Her hashtag “#dontwaitforsomeoneELSEtodoit!” says it all.

Messing, whose divorce was finalized in 2016, proved that you don’t need to be engaged or married to wear a fancy ring. And her fans agree. “I love that you bought and designed it for yourself!” one follower commented on the post. “Thank you for showing everyone it’s okay to value oneself enough to treat yourself! It took me until I turned 40 to realize it but I did finally! Love that you did too.” Another wrote: “Yaaaas, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve proposed to myself multiple times with a new ring each time.”
We’re not surprised by Messing’s empowering move. But she’s not the only one doing it. Of course, Carrie Bradshaw started the trend, when she set up a registry for her wedding to herself. And in October, Laura Mesi became the first Italian woman to marry herself, as part of a growing trend promoting self-love that’s known as “sologamy.”
If it means we get to buy more gorgeous jewels, we’re on board.
