Delta flight forced to make emergency landing after engine issue: 'We just saw all this smoke come up'

A passenger recorded the “terrifying situation” moments before a Delta Air Lines flight was forced to make an emergency landing because of a compromised engine.

Logan Webb, a passenger on Delta flight 1245, which was scheduled to fly from Atlanta to Baltimore on Monday, posted a video on Twitter that showed a piece of metal clattering inside one of the engines after it came loose, next to a lit, orange spinning shaft.

Delta Air Lines did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment, but in a statement to Storyful, the airline confirmed “the flight crew of Delta flight 1425 from Atlanta to Baltimore elected to divert to Raleigh, North Carolina, after receiving an indication of an issue with one of the aircraft’s engines.”

According to Baltimore news station WMAR-TV, the loose part wasn’t the only thing causing panic for over 150 people on the flight — passengers also heard a loud “boom” and saw smoke.

“After we heard the boom we just saw all this smoke come up into the cabin, and that’s when we really started freaking out,” Avery Porch, a passenger on traveling with her boyfriend, Tyler Kreuger, told the news station. “It started slowing down a bit, the air cut off.”

Kreuger added that people began to fear the worst.

“I pulled out my phone, and I know I didn’t have service,” Kruger said to WMAR-TV. “I just texted my mom 'I love you,’ I texted my dad 'I love you.’”

However, the plane was able to land safely, and no one was injured.

In his tweet, Webb thanked the airline for the “smooth emergency landing.” Others also applauded the airline for their efforts.

“The crew did an amazing job in staying and keeping us all calm, while preparing us for an emergency landing,” tweeted a fellow passenger who shared a video of a flight attendant keeping people on board informed and calm.

Porch told WMAR-TV that she felt safe under the watch of Delta Air Lines staff.

“I had a weird, eerie sense of calm over me, like I almost knew that they were going to take care of it, and they did,” Porch told the station. “I don’t think I’d be timid getting on a plane again being reassured that they handled it the way they did.”
