In late July, an outpouring of love and concern was felt nationwide as word of Demi Lovato’s drug overdose spread.

More than a week later, the singer reached out to her fans, posting an update on her health and fight for sobriety.

Now, nearly two months after Lovato’s scare, the 26-year-old’s mom, Dianna De la Garza, is sharing her memories of that fateful day.

“It’s still a really difficult thing to talk about," De la Garza told Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview. "I start to shake a little bit when I remember what happened that day."

“I was actually looking at my phone and all these texts started coming in — just text after text after text — and I thought ‘What is going on?’” Dianna recalled. “And someone said, ‘I just saw on TMZ, I’m so sorry. Please tell me it isn’t true,’ and my heart just dropped. I didn’t know what I was looking at. Before I could get to TMZ to see what they were reporting, I got a phone call from Demi’s assistant at the time, [Kelsey Kershner]. I answered the phone and Kelsey was rambling like she’d obviously been through something terrible. I said, ‘Kelsey, just tell me what’s going on,’ and the next words that came out of her mouth are just words that are so difficult to hear as a parent. She said, ‘Demi overdosed.’ I was in shock. I didn’t know what to say. It was just something I never ever expected to hear as a parent.”

The horror reached a new level when Kelsey told her that though Demi was conscious, she wasn’t speaking. “I knew at that point that we were in trouble,” she said.

When she found her way to the ER with her oldest daughter, Dallas, Dianna was concerned by her state. “She just didn’t look good at all,” she said. “She was in bad shape. But I said to her, 'Demi, I'm here. I love you.' And at that point she said back to me, 'I love you, too.'"

“From that point on, I never allowed myself to ever think that things weren't going to be OK," she continued, crediting her daughter’s recovery to the passion of her fans.

“I just feel like the reason she's alive today is because of the millions of prayers that went up that day when everybody found out what was happening. I don't think she would be here if it hadn't been for those prayers and the good doctors at Cedars-Sinai. They were the best. I couldn't have asked for a better team of people to save her life."

According to Dianna, Demi’s recovery is going well. “She's happy. She's healthy. She's working on her sobriety, and she's getting the help she needs,” she shared. “That in itself encourages me about her future and about the future of our family."

Lovato’s relapse has inspired the mother of three to jump into action to fight the opioid crisis sweeping the nation.

"You don't see it coming, and that's the scary thing. The opioid crisis in America is at an epidemic level, and people don't understand that until they start researching it ... After this happened, I started researching and looking into how opioids are killing our kids. It's happening, I think, it's every 15 minutes someone dies of an overdose. It's not just the kids, either — it's grown-ups. It's mothers. It's fathers."
