Last year, Demi Lovato came out as a strong and vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton during the presidential election, even going as far as to work for her campaign directly. Now, almost a year after the fact, the singer is giving us a peek into what the experience was like—including on election night.

"I actually was with the Clinton campaign in New York [on election night]. It was extremely uncomfortable," Lovato told Rolling Stone. "Everyone was devastated."

After Clinton's loss, Lovato admitted that she wasn't as sure that a woman will become president anytime soon.

"I don't know if it's in the near future. I think that our country has a lot of growing to do before that can happen, obviously," she said. "But it'll definitely happen."

Despite the fact that her candidate did not win, Lovato did take away some valuable lessons from being politically active—namely, confidence.

"[It taught me] that it's better to use your voice and lose fans than to not say anything at all and people-please," Lovato said. "I know there's a risk that comes with that, but I wanted to see a difference made in this country."

We think she's making all the difference.
