Denim Expert Ltd. to Open New Effluent Treatment Plant

Denim Expert Ltd. (DEL) is one leap closer to achieving its goal for 100 percent wastewater recycling.

The Bangladeshi denim producer announced this week that it will open a new biological effluent treatment plant (ETP) at its Chittagong campus.

DEL said the facility, which will open in December, is a testament to the company’s dedication to reducing its ecological footprint and safeguarding local ecosystems through advanced water management techniques. It will recycle 100 percent of DEL’s wastewater.

The plant will align with the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Wastewater Guidelines Version 2.0. The guidelines provide guidance on appropriate sludge disposal and provide a streamlined approach to sampling and testing. DEL joined the ZDHC Foundation in 2018.

“DEL is always committed to advancing sustainable manufacturing practices,” said Mostafiz Uddin, DEL managing director and CEO. “The establishment of this new biological ETP is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to practices that uphold our values and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.”

As one of the first factories to join the Partnership for Cleaner Textile (PaCT) and in the process of implementing the 3E program, Denim Expert is working toward 100 percent water reuse and full reliance on solar energy.

The manufacturer was named a “New Champion” by the World Economic Forum in 2020 for its “excellence in sustainability” and for provide opportunities to transgender people and human-trafficking survivors.

The company has partnered with organizations such as the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign program.
