Dermatologist Shereene Idriss Sets The Record Straight on Skincare Myths

From Harper's BAZAAR

Youtube comment sections are always a hotbed of dissent and debate. But on our Go To Bed With Me videos—a peek inside the nightly routine of our favorite celebrities, experts and influencers—the myths and facts around skin care in the comments are on another level. For our new video series, Derm Reacts, we call in leading board-certified skin experts to react to the most passionate comments on our Go to Bed with Me episodes. In this episode, dermatologist Shereene Idriss, who specializes in facial aesthetics and rejuvenation at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City, weighs in on everything from makeup wipes to oil cleansers.

"There is no typical nighttime skin care routine because everybody's different," Idriss starts. "But to simplify it, at night, you really want to take the time to take care of your skin, to let it regenerate and to let it heal from basically the whole day."

Are Makeup Wipes Just Like Washing Your Face?

On the issue of makeup wipes, Idriss says that they are not something she usually recommends for the following reasons: Makeup wipes aren't environmentally friendly (unless you happen to use biodegradable ones), and it's simply not the same as washing your face. "It helps get rid of the makeup," she explains, "but you still have to cleanse your skin and get rid of all the impurities that have built up throughout the day."

Should You Use an Oil-Based Cleanser?

On oil-based cleansers, Idriss says they are good in order to "melt the makeup off your skin." The type of cleanser you choose ultimately depends on whether or not you're wearing makeup and your skin type and texture.
