Derrick Henry's Offseason Training Includes This Intense Uphill Workout

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick "King" Henry ended his 2019 season on a high, having set personal records for rushing touchdowns (16), rushing yards (1,540) and carries (303). It stands to reason that Titans fans are pretty eager to see how the 26-year-old player performs during the next NFL season when it (hopefully) kicks off in September.

Henry just shared a look at his offseason training in a short video on Twitter. While his fellow NFL running back Saquon Barkley works on his lower-body strength with Nordic hamstring curls and legend-tier box jumps, Henry has been adopting a different approach, by taking his training outside — and uphill.

In the 27-second video, consisting of three clips (which will leave you feeling out of breath even after just watching it), Henry shows off his fast footwork on some ladder drills, then sprints up a grassy slope. The second clip sees him throw a medicine ball, run up the hill, and catch a football before making it to the top. And in the third, Henry does some bodyweight work, using a medicine ball to crank out reps of an assisted one-armed pushup (sometimes called the "archer" pushup), again on an upward incline.

"Hill workouts are great for sprints and runs, and definitely help reinforce the need for high knee drive, which is critical to speed," explains Men's Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel C.S.C.S.

Henry appears to show no sign of tiring during the intense uphill training — and after honing his technique at such an angle, a flat football field must seem like a piece of cake.
