Will Derry Girls Be Back for Season 4?
Earlier this month, Derry Girls, the hit show centered on a group of teens coming of age in 1990s Ireland, wrapped up its third season on Netflix. Though the episodes have only just arrived in the U.S., fans are already wondering when and if there could be more of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn) on the way.
For quite some time, the show's creator and writer, Lisa McGee, has been open about the intention to finish off the show with the third season; however she has given a few hints that have some fans hopeful that this might not be the end.
First, in 2021, McGee Tweeted a statement on the show's third season, saying, "It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. Derry Girls is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly...very slowly... start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of the time." However, toward the end of the statement, she did offer a glimmer of possibility, writing, "who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle, and James will return in some other guise someday.”
Then, in May 2022, she stoked hopes, saying "I love this world and I’d love to [return] at some point, but it’s just finding the right thing," according to Bustle. She added that she had already shared ideas for possible spinoffs with Derry Girls director Michael Lennox, including an idea focusing on some of the older characters of the show.
Similarly, she told the RadioTimes, "I definitely think [there's a potential for a spin-off about] the mums and those maybe older characters... There's so many like, generations and stuff on it." However, she concluded the thought on more of a down note, adding, "But no, basically we haven't really thought [about it]."
That sentiment was echoed in a later interview with Digital Spy, when the showrunner said, "I wouldn't do a spin-off now, and I have no plans to do a spin-off." Even then, though, she made it clear that her mind hasn't entirely turned away from the world of Derry Girls. "I have all this stuff that's been put to one side because I wanted to finish Derry Girls properly, and put all my focus on that and do it justice, but those things have to sort of move up the queue, so I wouldn't be able to make another for a while even if I wanted to. But I always thought, just for my own amusement. There's something in Aunt Sarah and Ma Mary, and there's something in Jenny Joyce and her little sidekick Aisling."
Until further notice, it seems, fans will just have to keep their fingers crossed.
