Paint brand Dutch Boy just announced their 2018 Color of the Year and it's (drumroll, please) Sandstone Tint (441-2DB). This "greige" - a.k.a. a blend of gray and beige - is a departure from the bold hues we've seen from other predictions this past year.

According to the company, it's "a hue that nods to the simplicity of the past, while also making a modern, color-confident statement that looks to the future." This shade is part of Dutch Boy's "Quest" palette, which features earth tones that are "as classic as they are sophisticated."

To be honest, it reminds us a lot of the shade Sherwin-Williams chose for their hue last year, Poised Taupe. While we appreciate the clean simplicity of it, we sought out to pros to find out what their first impressions are - and, let's just say, we got mixed feedback.

"As a lover of neutrals, Dutch Boy's Sandstone Tint (441-2DB) is the perfect selection of paint color," says designer Francesco Bilotto. "It's warm inviting tone offers a sophisticated setting, while its underlying crisp hue also appeals to the the modernist at heart who seeks clean and serene walls, yet wishes to elevate from a typical 'gallery white.'"

However, not everyone is a fan. "We all need a good neutral color from time to time, but [as designers] we center so much of our work around deep, dramatic and saturated hues so, frankly, I feel a bit let down by this," says designer Scot Meacham Wood. " The good news is, now I know what color to paint closet interiors."

As for designer Jeffrey Phillip, he says he sympathizes with those who are cringing at beige becoming so prominent, but he find the neutrals that have emerged over the past year more appealing than ever. "Sandstone feels brighter and more modern than that neutral from our past and will pair incredibly well with some of the other trending colors of the moment, such as shades of teal, dark blue and the continuously talked about millennial pink," he says.

Our take? Just like everyone is entitled to their own opinions, they're also entitled to their own style preferences. While Sandstone Tint might not be for everyone, people looking for a backdrop for bolder colors or who prefer an all-neutral palette will appreciate this new take on greige.
