? A lot happened, both within the plot and stylistically as well.
? One detail revealed explains another layer of a key character.
The finale of the first season of Euphoria aired, and while a lot certainly went down—a school dance, a big football game, a medical procedure, and a truly remarkable interpretative dance sequence, for starters—one minor detail that's been staring us in the face all season long was made painfully clear.
Early on in the episode, Jules encourages Rue to wear different, more flattering clothing than what we've seen her wear throughout the course of the season. "And the fact that you usually dress like Seth Rogen, although you make it cute sometimes, like, it crushes my soul," Jules says in the early moments of the episode. Rue is clearly put off a bit by this remark. "I don't dress like Seth Rogen," she says back. "When was the last time you didn't wear a hoodie and sweatpants?" Jules asks, continuing to press.
Rue finally gives in and wears the clothes that Jules recommends—but it's later in the Season 1 finale that we get clarity on why, exactly, Rue's been dressing this way for the duration of the season, and it's not just a bit of Billie Eilish 2019 teen style.
It's been no secret that Rue's father died of cancer in the time before the series' timeline began, and it's also been no secret just how close Rue was with her father. We see her caring for him at times, and it's clear how much he meant to her. This comes through not only in the flashback scenes, but in how strongly Rue feels about the men that her mother brings into the house romantically; she remarked in Episode 7 about how her mother's latest fling wasn't good enough to sit in her father's seat.
So it's quite the gut punch when a lengthy flashback sequence shows a moment not long after Rue's fathers death. We see her walk into the room where her sick father once laid, and picked up his maroon hoodie sweatshirt—the same one we've seen her wearing all season long.
In fact, we saw Rue wearing this sweatshirt in one of the very first moments of Episode 1:
The moment above was almost directly after Rue got out of rehab, when she first went to visit Fezco and Ashtray to get drugs. It brings a stark contrast to just how far Rue's come in the season, and, granted the way things may have turned out in the end (which was quite similar to the ending of showrunner Sam Levinson's movie, Assassination Nation), with Rue potentially spiraling once again, how far she can again fall. We'll see what happens when Season 2 rolls around next year.
