All the Details About Season 5 of 'The Rookie'
The Rookie introduced its fifth season at a Comic-Con panel in San Diego in July with executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter calling the new season “a transitional” one with “a lot of movement” as well as telling “harder stories.”
It will also see John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) return to a rookie status of sorts as he is promoted to the next level in his career within the LAPD, which starts him at the bottom of the rung again as he rises in the ranks. But there will also be a new female rookie added to the cast, so there is an actual rookie to keep the title true.

What happened in the Season 4 finale of The Rookie?
When Tamara (Dylan Conrique) drove by the station to show Lucy her new car, a drug-sniffing dog discovered a cache of drugs. The drug dealer who previously owned the car turned out to look remarkably like Tim, so the decision was made for Tim to go undercover. When Tim delivers the drugs, it doesn’t go well, but the dealers give him a second chance if he will bring his girlfriend along to be the driver. So, Lucy gets pulled into the sting. The two practice their background story and decide they had better do a practice kiss so they can sell their relationship. It is awkward, but then at the end, they have a for-real kiss!
Nyla requested maternity leave, which Grey granted her. She also informed him when she returns, she wants to transfer over to detectives. Grey said he will find a new T.O. for Aaron Thorsen.
Nolan and Bailey headed into the desert where Nolan had been assigned to a small station as a punishment for not kowtowing to the wants of the president of the union in his position as a union rep. He was paired up with a relative newbie, Gabrielle, and as he tried to teach her proper police procedure, they are caught up in a dangerous situation. They arrested a man they had pulled over for a traffic violation and he turned out to be a very bad guy, who had a lot of equally unlawful friends who tried to break him out of jail. In the end and after a gun fight, Nolan and Gabriel were able to manage the situation at the jail, while Bailey had to manage the situation at the motel. But all's well that ends well.
Are there any spoilers for Season 5 of The Rookie?
Thanks to the Comic-Con panel, which was reported on by several outlets, including Deadline and Hello!, we have several spoilers!
It took John Nolan four seasons to get past his rookie status from when he first joined the LAPD, but in Season 5, he’s a rookie once again as he moves up in the ranks and is once again low man on the totem pole in his new job.
“It’s kind of brilliant, the way we take a look at life and say, what keeps you a rookie? What in your life are you still a rookie at?” Fillion told the Comic-Con audience.
He also revealed that Nolan will get a shot at his dream job as a training officer who will oversee a new female rookie that reminds him very much of his own beginning on the force.
"I get a brand new rookie and I can’t believe the mistakes she makes and it’s brilliant the way we look at the mistakes in our own lives."
Of course, everyone wants to know what is going to happen between Lucy and Tim, and Hawley teased, “Obviously, we left quite the cliffhanger last season with the kiss which we’ve been building up to. There will definitely be some repercussions and fallout from that.”
As for the romance between Nolan and Bailey, Fillion shared that Bailey is a “safe and secure” figure in his life going into season five.
"These two aren’t wishy washy with each other, they’re enjoying each other’s company," he said. "And that’s a good thing for Nolan to have in his life, to have something safe and secure in Bailey is a new thing for him."
Other stories that will be addressed will involve Nyla’s pregnancy and her Cagney & Lacey-type dynamic with Angela when she returns from her maternity leave and goes back to being a detective rather than a TO.
Hawley also said, "Aaron will be out of rookie long sleeves and into P2, so there’s lots of movement and Season 5 will be transitional and we’ll be enriching those stories.”
Angela’s husband Wesley Evers, who has been a strong defender of the underdog as a defense attorney in the past seasons, will “crossing over from the defense side” into the arena of policing “in a more solid way,” according to Hawley.
And there could possibly be the return of a villain we’ve already met.
