It’s a retrospective year for Diane von Furstenberg.

For one, the fashion designer, now 77, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of her wrap dress. Just last month she was featured in a Hulu documentary, “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge,” depicting her life story. And now there’s an exhibition coming to Los Angeles, “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman Before Fashion,” which dives deeper into her history.

Opening on Oct. 17 at the Skirball Cultural Center — a Jewish institution founded in 1996 — the show explores her career from the 1970s to today, showcasing more than 50 garments from her archives alongside artwork, interviews, essays and other items. Also a look into her personal life, the exhibition shares her history as the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, with new artifacts “offering additional perspective on the factors that shaped her life and work,” notes the museum.

“Diane von Furstenberg: Woman Before Fashion” is making its North American debut after first being unveiled at the Fashion & Lace Museum in 2023 in Brussels, where the designer was born. The museum’s head of exhibitions and publications Nicolas Lor also authored a book of the same name, a tribute to Furstenberg published in 2023 by Rizzoli. Overseeing the project at the Skirball Cultural Center is Cate Thurston, managing curator of the exhibition.

“Diane von Furstenberg: Woman Before Fashion” will run until Sept. 1.
