Data from over 100 million reservations made this year by ClassPass users is in and proves that people across the country used the membership service to mix up their routines and crush their fitness goals in 2019. ClassPass users booked a combined total of over one billion (!) minutes of workouts from January through November, and the most popular way to sweat: strength training.

While last year treadmill classes saw the greatest popularity spike of any type of class booked on ClassPass, 2019 was the year of cross-training. Strength training came in at number 1 for top workout booked via ClassPass, followed by yoga and Pilates. Indoor cycling came in at number four.

As we know, most cyclists prefer to get their miles in outside whenever they can—especially when the weather is nice—so it’s safe to assume cyclists might use ClassPass as a supplement to their outdoor routine.

Strength training—important for injury prevention—was the top workout in major cities including Los Angeles, New York City, Washington D.C., and Chicago.

“Strength work is one of the best holistic activities for athletes of all types, so its rise in popularity comes as no surprise to us. Adding strength training can build muscle, increase bone density, and decrease risk of injury,” Shari Castelli, director of partner expansion at ClassPass told Runner’s World.

The most popular day of the week to work out was Tuesday, and the most common time to book a class was at 5:30 p.m. during weekdays (that postwork grind) and 10 a.m. on the weekends. So, if you want to avoid the crowds, you might consider becoming a morning workout person.

Plus, data showed that group classes—and mixing it up—helps people keep on track. The most popular group fitness class for first-timers was yoga, and 42 percent of people who joined ClassPass reported working out more, motivated by group fitness.

Another way people took advantage of booking workout classes was work-related. Class reservations showed that 18 percent of professionals worked out in a city other than their hometown during 2019. Plus, people reported that working out with colleagues helped them bond. So if you have to travel often for business or you’re looking for a new team building activity, group fitness might be a great option.

The other big trend in 2019? Self-care. ClassPass added wellness studios to its offerings, so users can book services such as meditation classes, massages, and facials. Each month, more ClassPass users took time to breathe and recover—there was a rise in booking these types of classes each month.

All this data shows that group training—and cross-training—of any kind doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Both types of training made the ACSM’s predictions for top 10 fitness trends of 2020.
