Why Did Zendaya Skip the 2023 Golden Globes?
The 2023 Golden Globe Awards are finally here—but Zendaya is nowhere to be seen.
The actress was won tonight in the category of Best Television Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Rue in HBO's Euphoria, marking her first0ever nomination for the acclaimed awards ceremony.
Though Zendaya has not yet publicly explained her absence from tonight's occasion, awards presenter Jay Ellis joked while accepting the trophy on her behalf, "She's busy, she's working, y'all."
Fans also know that the actress has been busy as of late shooting Dune: Part Two on location in Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Jordan, and Italy. The project reportedly wrapped filming last month.
Her last public appearance was at a FYC event in Los Angeles, where she was accompanied by her Euphoria costars.
Zendaya previously opened up about taking on the role in an April 2022 interview with Variety.
"One of the greatest honors about being able to play her is every story that I have now gained when people come to me and they share their stories of sobriety. It’s so beautiful to me every single time, and I think I take on those stories with me and they become part of who each time I play her," the Emmy winner told the outlet. "I get very emotional ... because I care about her a lot because she represents a lot of people that need a lot of love. And she represents part of myself, and she represents part of [Euphoria creator] Sam [Levinson]. That means a lot to me, and I just want people to be able to heal through her."
Of her character's Season 2 arc, she adds, "We carried her all the way to hopefully what is rock bottom and a dark moment, and hopefully by the end leave with a sense of happiness and joy that there is hope for her in the end."
