The Diplomatic Reason Meghan Markle Won't Have a Maid of Honor

She’s not part of the royal family yet, but Meghan Markle is already acting as a keeper of the peace.

It was announced Friday that the bride-to-be will not have a traditional maid of honor for the same reason my mom refuses to acknowledge me as her favorite child—that is, she didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

“She has a very close-knit circle of friends and she didn’t want to choose one over another,” said a palace spokesman on Friday, according to People. “All have been actively involved in helping her prepare for the day and will be there in the days beforehand. She’s very happy to have their support.”

Singling out a number one was a bit easier for Prince Harry, whose older bro Prince William is stepping into the role of best man for the big day. It’s only fair, considering Harry fulfilled best man duties for William for his own wedding back in 2011.

Kate Middleton also had sister Pippa by her side for the big day, but we never really expected Markle to follow suit by inviting half-sister Samantha Markle to fill the maid of honor role. Samantha said that she was not even invited to the wedding, and we’re guessing the original title of her forthcoming memoir—The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister, since renamed to A Tale of Two Sisters—may have had something to do with it. Just a guess. It should be noted, however, that both of her parents will be in attendance, and will each play a part in the official procession.

As for the members of the elusive inner circle that will help Meghan prep for her big day, People speculates actress Priyanka Chopra, stylist Jessica Mulroney, designer Misha Nonoo (who is widely believed to have introduced the betrothed couple) and college pal Lindsay Roth will be in the party. However, the palace has not specifically confirmed any official bridesmaids.
