Doctor on New Year’s Eve: 'I’m dreading the bad news I have to give tonight to families who lose loved ones to drunk driving’
New Year’s Eve is considered one of the “deadliest days” of the year and one emergency room doctor has issued a warning to her followers to stay safe.
On Monday afternoon, Esther Choo, MD, MPH took to her Twitter to write that she’s “dreading the bad news I have to give tonight to families who lose loved ones to drunk driving.”
I’m dreading the bad news I have to give tonight to families who lose loved ones to drunk driving. PLEASE: plan tonite so you can live for many more parties. Take it slow. Designate a sober driver or Uber/Lyft it. Prioritize staying safe & sound??Your friendly neighborhood ER doc

She went on to provide some resources such as Uber and Lyft in the case that people don’t have a designated sober driver. But the nearly 1,000 people to comment on the post also chimed in with some helpful information about AAA’s Holiday Safe Ride Program, and even urging parents to encourage their kids to call them to be picked up.
In some parts of the US, AAA clubs offer free tows/rides home. You can see if this is in place in your area by checking here: https://t.co/KyCrHWakym

And please – talk about this with your kids. Re-up the “You can call me to pick you up any time, for any reason or no reason, no questions asked” talk.

Never second guess stealing keys from drunk friends. They're drunk and if they don't thank you later, the rest of us will. Happy NYE!

Others shared their appreciation for Choo’s work and even thanked her for taking the time to put out the critical warning.
Dear Dr Choo,
I hope you have the dullest, most boring shift you have ever had in your career at the hospital.
Good luck today.

Thank you for working tonight. May your most stressful event be the clipping of a hangnail (on a very attractive fireman) and may the cafeteria be serving all of your favorite dishes. Happy New Year. Everyone else? Listen to the Dr, don't drink and drive.

Thank you and your extended healthcare teams who are there for any and all of us/our loved ones, any time, any day. May the sorrows tonight be few (if any) and may your compassionate care be a blessing to those who need you🙏🏼
