The best treatments for hair loss
Read on for the expert-backed best treatments for hair loss that encourage new hair growth.
1. Best treatment for hair loss: Platelet-rich plasma injections
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), found in our blood, is chock-full of growth factors and proteins that help stimulate new hair, says a New York City dermatologist Francesca Fusco, MD, who specializes in hair care. How the injections work: Your doctor takes a small amount of your blood and separates out its PRP factors, then applies a local anesthetic to your scalp and injects the PRP to stimulate hair growth. “Studies show an 80% success rate with PRP injections,” says New York City hair loss specialist Michael Lorin Reed, MD. The cost is generally $500 to $2,500 per treatment. Adds Dr. Reed, “Some patients need just one injection, others need several.”

2. Best treatment for hair loss: Low-level laser light therapy
The discovery that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) can help regrow hair without the need for pills or chemicals is one of the greatest breakthroughs for the millions of women facing this problem. “LLLT uses light energy at a particular wavelength to stimulate hair follicles, pressing their ‘reset button’ so the follicles enter the hair growth cycle,” explains Dr. Fusco.
When the painless “cool” red light energy used in LLLT is emitted through a device or panel of lights into aging follicles, it stimulates the mitochondria, or energy centers, within the cells, causing hairs to remain in the growth phase, says dermatologist Erin Gilbert, MD. “This results in a reduction of the shedding of hair.” In-office LLLT costs, on average, $1,500 to $3,500 per session.

3. Best treatment for hair loss: Hair transplant
“Women often think they can’t get a hair transplant, but they can — they just need a good donor site at the back of their head,” says Dr. Reed. “There’s now a patient-friendly technique that lets us extract hair under local anesthetic, meaning no scarring or downtime.” The average price for female hair transplants ranges from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the number of hairs that need to be extracted and replanted.

4. Best treatment for hair loss: Microneedling
A simple procedure, microneedling or derma rolling is when very fine needles are moved across the scalp to kickstart the body’s natural healing response, which spurs hair growth. The needles create “micro portals” that enhance the absorption of minoxidil or other hair growth–boosting treatments applied afterward. The average cost per session ranges from $200 to $700 and is generally not covered by insurance.
Dermatologist Jenny Liu, MD, explains more in her TikTok below how great this treatment is used with minoxidil.
