When Does Summer End? Here's the Date to Keep in Mind for 2024
All good things have to come to an end and summer is never long enough. When the warm weather hits, we tend to get busy with fun outdoor activities. There hardly seems to be enough time to schedule all of the camping trips, beach vacations and boating or fishing excursions. It's no wonder summer goes so fast! But, when does summer end exactly?
The summer season is unofficially bookended by two significant holidays, Memorial Day and Labor Day, and many people think of summer as the period between the two. However, that is not the official season. In fact, Memorial Day is actually in the spring and the last day of summer is actually almost three weeks after Labor Day. Officially, summer is defined by the period between the summer solstice and the fall equinox.

Although some consider summer's end to be Labor Day or when the kids go back to school, the official last day of summer for 2024 is September 22.
It seems like winters go on forever but summers fly by at lightning speed. By the 4th of July, some stores are already putting out fall clothes which sends a clear message that summer is on its way out.

Is It the Same Day Every Year?
Summer always ends during the autumnal equinox. This is the period when the amount of daylight and dark are equal in length. In the Northern Hemisphere, this typically happens on September 22 or 23. So, it may not be the exact same day every year—but it's close.

How Long Does Summer Last?
Although it feels like summer never lasts long enough, it does technically last a full three months. Summer officially starts on June 20 or 21 and lasts all the way to September 22 or 23. If we are blessed with a warm spring and fall, summer could feel like it lasts even longer!
