Dolly Parton Speaks Out in Support of Black Lives Matter in New Interview
Dolly Parton is known not only for her music but also for speaking up for her beliefs.
Most recently, the “Jolene” singer shared her views on the Black Lives Matter movement.
Dolly Parton has always been a source of optimism in this world. And, even as the coronavirus pandemic continues, the 74-year-old actress is keeping her wits about herself.
“All of the things that I’m involved in are on hold, even my production companies and the movies — everything [took] a big hit. But I still believe, still trust God, and I’m still hoping for the best,” Dolly said in an interview with Billboard.
And it’s not just herself she’s hoping for. She says her goal is to make as many people as possible, feel as good as possible. And part of that includes standing up for her Black brothers and sisters.
While she hasn’t attended any recent protests or marches, she stands strong in her convictions of equality. “I understand people having to make themselves known and felt and seen,” she said in the interview. “And of course Black lives matter. Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No!”
When Billboard asked about her stance, Dolly made it abundantly clear. “First of all, I’m not a judgmental person,” she shared in the interview. “I do believe we all have a right to be exactly who we are, and it is not my place to judge. All these good Christian people that are supposed to be such good Christian people, the last thing we’re supposed to do is to judge one another. God is the judge, not us. I just try to be myself. I try to let everybody else be themselves.”
Dolly also spoke about her decision to change the name of her "Dixie Stampede" establishment to simply "The Stampede in 2018, after she realized that the term "Dixie" could have offensive ties to slavery. “There’s such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that,” she said. "As soon as you realize that [something] is a problem, you should fix it. Don’t be a dumbass. That’s where my heart is. I would never dream of hurting anybody on purpose.”
As if we needed another reason to love Dolly!
