Don’t Make Fun of Your Friend for Buying into Personalized Haircare—It’s Legit

Patricia Shannon

It’s way too easy to spend money these days. No longer are our purchases limited to what’s stocked before us in the grocery store aisles. We can customize our vitamins, our anti-aging regimen, and even our haircare. Many of us do just that in the hope that we might hit our health and fitness goals more easily, uncover our freshest complexion without a 10-step skincare routine, and finally have shiny, frizz-free hair that’s not weighed down at the root. It’s a tall order, but not outside of the realm of possibilities.

To give you a little background, my hair is fine, wavy, and thick. Fine and thick reads like a typo, but I can assure you my hair fits the bill. My strands are thin, but there are a lot of them. This typically results in hair that knots easily, has a penchant for flyaways, and is ever lacking oomph at the root. Finding a traditional hair mask might work for the flyaways and tangles, but they typically make my hair heavy—which means volume doesn’t stand a chance. Function of Beauty’s hair quiz took all of this into consideration and spun up a Custom Hair Mask that detangles, adds shine, and never leaves me with anything other than the breeziest, bounciest hair. I’ve used countless hair masks, but this $19 version is at the very top of my list of favorites.

My Custom Hair Mask came with personalized instructions on how to apply, how often to use, and the proper way to work it through my hair. I followed the instructions to a T, and it payed off by solving a number of hair issues I’ve been using a handful of products to combat. What’s more, each Function of Beauty product is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and mineral oils.

Now here’s the thing we really want to know before slathering anything on our hair: What does it smell like? That’s customizable too. I chose “all (you) calyptus.” It’s refreshing, invigorating, and somehow works to start my day off on a soothing note. Other scent options include pear, peach, cherry blossom, milkshake, and fragrance free. You can also choose the level of scent in your product from light to strong. Medium is perfectly pleasant—it’s there but not at all overpowering. It gets my vote.
