The Dos and Don'ts For Your First Trip To Dollywood

Read these do's and don'ts for the best park experience ever.

As Tennessee’s number one ticketed attraction, about three million people pass through Dollywood’s gates every year. With wild roller coasters, live entertainment, carnival games, food, and everything Dolly Parton-related, you’re practically guaranteed to have a good time here. But it doesn’t hurt to have a strategy when visiting the park, especially if it’s your first time.

We’ve rounded up a few things you should know before going to Dollywood, including some common mistakes. Consider this your cheat sheet to having the best park experience ever.

Don't Miss Out On Special Ticket Offers

Before you book your tickets, check out Dollywood’s special offers page, which has discounts and add-ons for the theme park, water park, and both resorts. While these offers change throughout the year, military discounts are available year-round. If you’re traveling with a group of 15 people or more, you’re eligible for a discount too: if you make your reservations at least two weeks in advance, you’ll get one free ticket for each 15 tickets paid.

Do Be Aware Of Height Requirements

If you’re traveling with kids to the theme park, familiarize yourself with the height requirements for all of the rides. No one wants to be told they are too short to ride after waiting in a line! Smaller kids have the most options in the County Fair and Wildwood Grove sections of the park, where there are 12 rides for visitors 36” tall and under. Inside the park, you can visit the Centralized Measuring station, which is between the Ride Accessibility Center and Rental Services on Showstreet. Park employees will give children a color-coded wristband so they can easily see which rides they can go on.

Don't Bring Food

Forget packing a cooler with drinks and snacks. Outside food is not allowed in the park. There are more than 30 restaurants and places to buy things to eat, ranging from sit-down meals to fair food like soft pretzels and the famous Grist Mill Cinnamon Bread. Restaurants here can get crowded, especially during prime times. The park recommends arriving early and giving your name and number with a restaurant host, so they can text you when your table is ready.

Do Bring A Bottle Of Water

The park allows each person to bring in one unopened water bottle. There are refill stations around the park, and you can also get free ice water at any place that serves food.

Do Get a TimeSaver Pass

If waiting in line causes you or your family members to melt down, consider getting a TimeSaver Pass, which gives you faster access to 13 attractions, plus priority seating at select theaters for an additional fee. There are three different tiers, which give you different levels of access. If you stay at one of Dollywood’s resorts, TimeSaver passes are included if you have purchased park tickets.

Don’t Go During Spring Break

It’s understandable why people flock to Dollywood for spring break, but if you’re looking for a less crowded experience, don’t be one of them. Weekdays are less busy than weekends, according to the park. Check the calendar for special programs and operating hours.

Do Use A Map

This park is huge. Whether you grab a paper map on your way in, or download the Dollywood app, you’re going to need a guide to get around, locate rides, and maximize your time.

Don’t Miss Dolly’s Tennessee Mountain Home

Yes, it’s not as flashy as Dragonflier or the brand-new Dolly Parton Experience, but the replica of Dolly Parton’s childhood home is a must-see. Not only is it a reminder of her humble beginnings before she became a worldwide country star, it’s a good spot if you’re looking for a quiet, peaceful break from all the action.
