The Double Sweater Trend Will Maximize Your Cozy Vibes

More is more this winter.

As soon as the temps drop, you’re eager to pull out your favorite sweaters and layer up for the crisp, chilly fall days. But if the runways are any indication, one sweater is simply not enough this season. You must be wearing two or even three sweaters to really maximize the moment. Sounds sweaty and bulky, right? Not so fast! Designers have cracked the code on layering sweaters for a look that feels as stylish as it is cozy.

The Trend

Okay, sweaters and fall fashion are not a groundbreaking combination in any form, though they do feature more heavily in certain fashion seasons than others. The layered sweater trend started with Miu Miu, who first showed layers upon layers of shirts in fall ‘22, then moved on to prim twinsets alongside their librarian-chic collection. And that wasn’t the end of their layer love; Prada’s baby sister line went on to experiment with more sweater-on-sweater action in their Spring ‘23 ready-to-wear collection, layering lightweight, slim-fitting sweaters atop each other in both straightforward and more shall-we-say creative methods, proving that the humble sweater doesn’t have to be boring.

Sandy Liang also showed a creative take on sweater layering for her Spring/Summer 24 show, sending models down the runway wearing a sweater sets layered with an additional cardigan tied around their shoulders. If the ‘90s-inspired sweater layering isn’t really your thing and you’re looking for something a bit more polished, designer Danielle Guizio’s layered cardigan sweaters may be the combo you’re looking for. The brand styled their soft, equally ‘90s-inspired Mohair Cardigans atop each other for a sweet, coquettish combo.

How to Wear It

The easiest way to experiment with the sweater layering trend is with a classic twinset shell and cardigan; it’s a great entry point for anyone who isn’t super comfortable with layering as a styling technique. Another starter idea is to wear a slightly longer, slim-fitting sweater under a simple crewneck and letting the hem and sleeves peek out; that gives you the layered feel without thinking about it too much.

If you do want to layer up, think lighter weight fabrics to avoid bulkiness, like merino wool, cotton- or silk-wool blends, featherlight, thin cashmere or mohair. Experiment with different sweater styles, like a crewneck or V-neck over a turtleneck, a crewneck under a cardigan or a Guizio-esque cardi pairing. For a preppy twist, wear a sweater tied around your sweater-wearing shoulders. Another fun layering trend that we’ve been enjoying for a few years is to wear one sweater and wrap one in an identical color around your neck and shoulders like an oversized chunky scarf.

Luckily for you, there are sweater options everywhere, and you probably have more than a few options in your closet already. If not, this is a great time to make a trip to the thrift or consignment shop; look for lightweight sweaters in a variety of styles to make mixing, matching and layering easy. You’re warm, you’re on-trend… what could be better?
