Doug Emhoff sweetly congratulates wife Kamala Harris on VP win: 'So proud of you'

Doug Emhoff is one proud Second Gentleman.

The husband of Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, took to Twitter on Saturday to congratulate his wife upon hearing the news that she and Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. As the Associated Press called the race for Biden when he crossed the 270-vote threshold in the Electoral College, it became clear that Harris will be the first Black woman and first Asian American woman to serve as vice president in the United States.

“So proud of you,” Emhoff, 56, said in a tweet, followed by a series of heart and American flag emojis. The tweet accompanied a photo of the two in a loving embrace as they received the news this morning.

Dressed in workout clothing and toting headphones, it appears that Harris, 55, was exercising when she heard the historic news.

Back in August, Emhoff and Harris celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary. They were set up in 2013 by Harris’s best friend Chrisette Hudlin, who was a client of Emhoff, according to the Los Angeles Times. After their first date, Emhoff left Harris a rambling message that made him fear he had blown his chances with Harris.

“He thought his voicemail had been disastrous and that he’d likely never hear from me again,” Harris wrote in her 2019 memoir The Truths We Hold, according to The Washington Post. “He had to restrain himself from calling again and leaving another long-winded message trying to explain the first one.”

The couple went on to be married in 2014 in a California courthouse.

In a video of her own, Harris could be seeing smiling as she spoke with Biden on the phone. "We did it Joe," she said excitedly. "You’re going to be the next President of the United States."

Emhoff wasn’t the only member of the family to celebrate the win. Harris’s sister Maya shared a photo of their late mother, along with a tweet reading “Mommy taught us we could be and do anything. She would be beyond proud today.”

Meena Harris, Maya’s daughter, joyfully tweeted, “My 4 year old just yelled “BLACK GIRLS ARE WELCOME TO BE PRESIDENT!” She followed that up with a series of other tweets writing, “Empathy, compassion, and decency won” and “A black woman from Oakland is about to be Vice President of the United States.”

Jill Biden also took to Twitter to honor her husband. “He will be a President for all of our families,” she tweeted with a photo of the couple holding up a sign that read, “Dr. & Vice President Biden Live Here.” In the shot, her hand is placed over the “Vice” to recognize his upcoming title as president.

Mr. Biden, who turns 78 this month, will be oldest person ever elected president in the United States. With more than 74 million votes in his favor, he broke the record for the most number of votes cast for any presidential candidate in history, breaking Barack Obama’s 2008 record of 69,500,000. President Donald Trump also beat Obama’s record, but followed Biden by more than 4 million in the popular vote, Yahoo previously reported.
