How to Dress Up a Plain Birch Twig Wreath
Natural twig wreaths are a beautiful and rustic alternative to traditional pine wreaths, but a plain birch branch wreath can look a little too simply when you're trying to turn on your home's holiday charm. This easy DIY project will help you take a basic birch brand wreath from blah to beautiful with just a few basic supplies and a bit of time.
Supplies Needed
30-inch wispy birch wreath
Faux Ming pine sprays with attached pinecones
Faux fir sprays
Hot-glue gun and glue sticks
Florist's wire
Wire snips
2-1/3 yards of 4-inch-wide wire-edge burlap ribbon
1 yard metallic ribbon
Scissors
Rust-color jingle bells (one 3-inch and one 2-inch)

How to Make the Wreath
We started with a purchased birch branch wreath that measures a full 30 inches from edge to edge, but you can tailor this project to your available space by scaling your wreath size up or down. Also, if you can't find a birch wreath, look for a similar twig wreath with a swooping branch construction. You can find them made of grapevine and eucalyptus as well as birch.
Insert the Ming pine sprays into the wreath in a clockwise direction, allowing the wispy, twiggy ends to show. When you're completely satisfied with the look, hot-glue or wire the ming pine sprays to the wreath. Fill in with faux fir sprays, working clockwise. When satisfied with the look, hot-glue or wire the faux fir sprays to the wreath.
Wire or hot-glue a bow made from the burlap ribbon on the top of the wreath, placing it slightly off center. To make the wreath bow, cut a 60-inch length of ribbon. Leaving an 8-inch tail, make a 7-inch loop, holding the ribbon between your thumb and index finger. Continue holding the ribbon, and make a second loop the same size in the opposite direction. Make another loop the same size in the same direction as the original loop. Wrap wire around the bow center, not trimming the wire ends. For the remaining bow tails, wire the remaining piece of ribbon to the center.
Center a bow made from the metallic ribbon on top of the burlap bow. Make your loops 6 inches long and the tail 12 inches long. Wire the metallic ribbon bow to the burlap bow.
Thread the bells onto a piece of florist's wire. Position the bells on top of the bows and wire in place. Trim the wire and ribbon ends.
