Dsquared2 Pre-Fall 2021

Like the girls in the Cyndi Lauper anthem, Dean and Dan Caten just want to have fun.

If for spring 2021 they kept it quite minimal and simple by revisiting a Nineties’ inspiration through a punk filter, for pre-fall they indulged the young, playful and rebellious spirit that has long defined their fashions.

“She is a cool chick that doesn’t give a s–t,” Dan Caten declared during a Zoom call, describing the girl they envisioned for the season and captured in look book images with a vantage caravan as the backdrop. “It’s not about a logic, it’s about a piece that she loves,” Caten continued, explained that even if the lineup was conceived to cover all merchandising categories and dressing occasions, and encompassed multiple inspirations, he and his twin brother sought to give a distinctive attitude to each piece.

Circle skirts worn with plaid shirts, cardigans and lace-up rain boots summoned a British gardening feel, while the tomboy skater vibe of maxi hoodies with patchwork details were unexpectedly teamed with leopard HotPants layered over lace leggings. Camouflage cargo pants and baggy shorts with quilted details seemed stolen from a boy’s wardrobe, while mini frocks with lingerie-inspired lace details were layered under cozy, oversize patchwork knits. Dsquared2’s signature denim pieces, as well as the brand’s hybrid outerwear styles, were also widely developed in the lineup, next to sexy Eighties minidresses.

Armed with irony and irreverence, the Caten brothers also flirted with bad taste, with Dan Caten at one point declaring: “It’s trashy.” The result was zesty, fresh, and underneath the intentionally messy pileups was a great offering of beautifully crafted pieces conceived to last for many seasons in a woman’s wardrobe. Fun: Sometimes that’s what you really want from fashion.
