Dua Lipa sports extreme low-rise jeans: 'Backstage nonna'
Dua Lipa is ushering in the trend of low-rise pants — extremely low-rise pants, in this case.
In a March 18 Instagram post, the “Levitating” singer sported a red bodysuit, headscarf, yellow-tinted sunglasses and jeans that sat well below her hips. She jokingly captioned the pic, “Backstage nonna.”
Lipa’s followers gushed over the photo, writing comments like “I LOVE YOU” and “Queen.”
Yet Lipa’s low-rise pants are not without controversy. For many millennials who remember the days of pulling up one’s pants to avoid underwear exposure (or hiking up their thongs, a la Cassie Steele's Manny Santos on Degrassi: The Next Generation, to achieve the exact opposite look) low-rise jeans are one trend they do not want to revisit. Many TikTokers are lamenting over the thought of these pants replacing the high-waisted pants that have reigned supreme over the last decade.
Others, however, are in Lipa's camp and are really embracing the trend.
It’s not the first time the Future Nostalgia artist has rocked low-rise jeans, however. In January, she posted a photo of herself with lacy black underwear poking out of her jeans.
In February, the ex-girlfriend of Anwar Hadid took herself out on a date while also wearing a pair of the hip-grazing pants. She captioned her Instagram post of the evening, "TABLE FOR 1."
Lipa has long been interested in pushing the boundaries of fashion — and making it more inclusive. In a 2020 interview with Wall Street Journal Magazine, she explained, “Times have changed so much that you see beautiful models of all sizes, of all races, of different genders. It’s amazing to have that now be the beauty spectrum when it was so limited before. Fashion is evolving so quickly, people are really being accountable and taking a stand for things that they believe in. And I love that I was a part of it now, in this time of change.”
