Apr. 29—SUPERIOR — Duluth's Best Bread is opening a location in Superior.

After a successful pop-up run in March, owners Robert and Michael Lillegard decided to make the site a permanent location at 1418 Tower Ave.

"The response was really great," said Robert Lillegard. "And the community looks really interested."

With Superior coming out "in a huge way," he said it made the decision to open a location in Superior really clear.

But don't expect the name to change.

"People ask us — will you be Superior's Best Bread?" Robert said. "We're going to be like Seattle's Best or Milwaukee's Best. The name stays."

Michael Lillegard said keeping the name actually makes things easier.

"It's a more defensible claim," he said. "We don't have to prove we're the best bread in Superior, too; just in Duluth."

Duluth's Best Bread will open May 28 and operate 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays at 1418 Tower Ave.

The family-owned French-German bakery opened its first store in 2015 in Lincoln Park and its second store in 2022 in downtown Duluth.

Like the downtown Duluth store, the store in Superior will be a bakery café where people can sip an Italian-style espresso and eat a croissant, or pick up fresh baguettes for the day, Lillegard said. The bakery will serve its entire product line of French and German baked goods.

But folks won't have to wait until May 28 to get Duluth's Best Bread in Superior.

Mama T's Smokin Eats, Bucktales and Aces on 29th carry the company's German pretzels, and 2540 Coffee carries its cookies. The company also delivers Taste Tester Boxes to homes in Superior on the second Thursday of each month. Sign up online at
