'DWTS' Len Goodman Wants People to Take Sun Protection Seriously After a Skin Cancer Scare

From Woman's Day

Dancing with the Stars is set to return to your TVs soon, but in the meantime, beloved British judge Len Goodman is taking a break to play golf and remind people about the importance of sun protection. A Facebook post from the British nonprofit, Melanoma Fund, shows a photo of Goodman pointing to his forehead, which has a bandage on it. In the caption they share that Goodman has asked them to "keep spreading the word" about the importance of sun protection, saying that "he has just had skin cancer removed."

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with estimates that one in five Americans will have skin cancer in their lifetime. The AAD notes that exposure to UV light is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers, which means taking actions like limiting your exposure to the sun, wearing sunscreen, and avoiding activities like tanning can all be easy ways to limit your risk of developing skin cancer.

The Melanoma Fund's post says Goodman wanted them to share the image "to inspire others to take the issue seriously," and looking at the comments, it appears it's done just that.

"Absolutely so important to cover up and apply lots of sunscreen," Christine Meaton wrote.

"Get well soon Len, we should all know this by now about protection and being careful in the sun. Also in the winter!" Merle Watson replied. And many people in the comments shared their own experiences with skin cancer. "I had a stage 3 melanoma removed from my left cheek which meant an operation and a large scar," Sue Craig wrote. "Never dismiss any moles or marks that start to grow, bleed, darken or just don't look right." If you have any new or unusual marks or spots on your skin, be sure to watch for changes and consult a doctor.
