Easy craft idea for kids: A DIY 'magic' wallet
Looking for an easy activity to keep kids busy while quarantining at home?
Try having them make this DIY wallet that works like a magic trick – it’s more than just an optical illusion. The money placed inside will “magically” flip sides after opening and closing it. Though younger children might need help cutting and folding, this activity will help develop motor skills and spark wonder and curiosity in kids of all ages (and maybe adults too).
Watch the how-to video above, and read below for full instructions.
DIY “Magic” Wallet
Supplies:
2 pieces of paper cut into a rectangle measured 3 ? by 2 in. (preferably cardstock, though any paper will do)
4 pieces of paper cut into strips measured 3 ? by ? in. (preferably standard printer paper)
Tape
1 dollar bill
Step 1: Place both 3 ? by 2 in. pieces of paper down on a flat surface, vertically and side-by-side.
Step 2: Take 2 of the smaller strips and make an X.
Step 3: Place the X down on the middle of the paper to the right.
Step 4: Flip it over.
Step 5: Fold the edges of the X over on the right side.
Step 6: Secure the edges with tape.
Step 7: Tape the opposite sides of the X to the paper on the left.
Step 8: Slide the last 2 strips under the top and bottom of the paper on the left.
Step 9: Tape the edges of those strips to the paper on the right.
Step 10: Fold the edges of the strips over on the left.
Step 11: Secure the edges with tape.
Fold the dollar bill so it will fit into the “wallet.” Slide it under the strips on one side, and then fold the wallet and open it again to reveal the magic trick!
