What Happens If You Eat Raw Brussels Sprouts?

Enjoying raw Brussels sprouts can add a crunchy profile to salads and other dishes, but all that fiber can sometimes be too much for certain people. “Like other cruciferous vegetables, raw Brussels sprouts contain indigestible fiber that could cause extra gas in some people who may not be used to eating it raw,” says Pornsriniyom.

How To Cook Brussels Sprouts

We love enjoying our Brussels sprouts raw, but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of delicious ways to cook them. Crispy, smashed, or maple roasted with bacon are going to be a delightful addition to any family dinner.

  • Roasted. For Pornsriniyom, a favorite way is roasted. “Set your oven to 400 degrees F and toss them with olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Roast them for 15-20 minutes until the skin becomes crispy.”

  • Fried. But crispy is very tasty as well. “There is something that I just love about the crispy texture of fried Brussels sprouts,” said celebrity chef Marcel Vigneron. “It's like they somehow transcend from a common cabbage into this incredible vehicle for different sauces,” notes Vigneron.

  • Blanched. Never be afraid to have some fun with this cruciferous vegetable. “Probably one of my all time favorite preparations involves blanching, dehydrating, and frying the leaves to make crispy chips,” said Vigneron.
