EBay Experienced a Spike in Searches for Certain Brands During the Royal Wedding

Meghan Markle’s wedding dress designer was expertly kept under wraps in the months leading up to the royal wedding, but now that the cat’s out of the bag, so to speak, the impact of her fashion choices are being felt by a number of major brands. In a newly released trend report, eBay revealed that Givenchy was bumped to the top of the most searched list following—and even during—the 2018 Royal Wedding on May 19.

Markle’s custom-made, double bonded silk cady gown drew praise from fashion experts and royal fans alike; her second gown, a sultry, sleeveless, high-neck Stella McCartney number, also led to a bump in searches for the British designer. (It didn’t hurt that McCartney also helped design the mother-of-the-bride’s evening look, as well as Oprah Winfrey and Amal Clooney’s much-talked-about day dresses).

Vivienne Westwood, who designed Markle’s longtime pal Priyanka Chopra’s much-buzzed about lavender look, actually trumped McCartney in searches, however, coming in as the second-most searched, per eBay’s trend report. In a throwback to Kate Middleton’s 2011 nuptials, Alexander McQueen also appeared high in searches on the buy-and-sell platform. (McQueen famously created Middleton’s off-white coat dress, and has designed many of her looks since).

Middleton’s younger sister, Pippa, also garnered major attention at the royal wedding (she was, after all, the breakout star at Kate and Prince William’s nuptials). Her floral cocktail dress, created by British brand The Fold, made a major jump in searches, a hefty 700 percent leap between Friday, May 18 and the wedding day of May 19.

Searches for the designer behind Princess Beatrice’s teal dress, fashion label Roksanda, also saw a huge increase, with buyers seeking their designs out at a 500 percent jump from the day before.

Though not brand-specific, several of the guests’ colorful dresses at the royal wedding also sparked specific search surges: Oprah and Serena Williams’ rose-colored dresses led to a 95 percent increase in searches for rose dresses, and Amal Clooney’s Lemonade-esque yellow dress may have caused a 33 percent increase in searches for yellow dresses.

Guests of the nuptials, meanwhile, are also using eBay to cash in on the wedding itself. One seller behind the “Official Royal Wedding Gift Bag”—one of 1,200 to be exact—has experienced a bid of $27,400 as of Tuesday afternoon.
