Ed Sheeran Tells BFF Taylor Swift the Sweet Meaning Behind His ‘End Game’ Lyrics and We’re Melting
Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran’s friendship has sparked some more-than-friends rumors over the years, but the love between these two is purely platonic. In a new behind-the-scenes video from their “End Game” video (which also includes rapper Future), Sheeran actually admits that his lyrics in the song are a sweet nod to his longtime love Cherry Seaborn, whom both he and Swift totally adore.
“I wanna talk about the Fourth of July line because that makes me really happy,” Swift says to Sheeran as the two sit on set between takes. The lyrics — which she sings to Sheeran in an impression of his English accent — are, “After the storm, something was born on the Fourth of July.” Sheeran says they’re a reference to the Tom Cruise movie Born on the Fourth of July — but there’s a little more to it than that.
“Well, you see, it’s kind of a play on words — well, not really a play on words. … My relationship started on the Fourth of July,” he explains.
“At whose house?!” Swift pipes in.
“At Taylor’s house,” Sheeran says.”So the story was, I was at Taylor’s party, and then a girl I went to school with who’s pretty cool ended up being in Rhode Island…I was like, ‘Taylor, can she turn up?’ And here we are.” (The longtime friends are referring, of course, to Swift’s legendary A-list Fourth of July parties held at her Rhode Island mansion. She opted to skip the party in 2017 during her break from the public eye.)
Before Sheeran can even finish his sentence, Swift sighs and says, “Ugh, she is the coolest.”
Seaborn turned out to be Sheeran’s “End Game” after all — the pair announced their engagement in a sweet Instagram post in late January. Check out the full behind-the-scenes chat between Swift and Sheeran below!
